Useful Flying information
How to get a better air fare.
Flight prices vary according to the day of the week and even the time of day.
Be flexible in your travel plans in order to get the lowest fare.
Flight ticket prices are not static. Often a limited number of seats are
offered at discount prices, well in advance of flight departure date. In the
days leading up to the departure, unsold seats may be released at discount
prices in order to fill capacity. (The same works with our hotel bookings). It
is worth monitoring prices online as you may still be able to get a discount
fare, sometimes only hours before the flight departs.

At many international departure points, cheaper fares can sometimes be
obtained by leaving from an alternative airport. Likewise, arriving at a
different airport can also affect ticket prices.
Is non-stop better - not always!! Often changing flights intra-journey can
save you money. One of our staff saved hundreds on a family trip from Brisbane
to Christchurch by changing planes in Auckland.
Check the refund policy on your ticket before purchase - often you may not be
eligible for a refund if you cancel your ticket, or cancel within a certain time
frame (insurance helps here!).
Security.
Increased security measures have imposed additional identity verification
measures on travellers. It is important that all tickets be issued in exactly
the same name as appears on identity documentation. For domestic travel this may
be as simple as your drivers licence. For international travel your passport is
your primary source of identification.
Ensure photo IDs are kept current, especially if your appearance has changed
significantly since the photo ID was issued.
Ticket Issues.
ALWAYS notify the airline as soon as you realise you have lost your ticket.
ALWAYS keep your ticket details separate from your tickets in case you lose
your tickets. Re-issue of lost tickets is often reliant on you being able to
quote your ticket number in addition to being able to identify yourself.
If you lose your ticket and have to be reissued with a new ticket, this may
be classified as a new purchase and you may lose the benefit of the discount.
Alternatively, you may receive a refund, but still need to purchase a new
ticket. Policies vary with different airlines.
Delayed Flights.
Airline delays are not uncommon, so it is worth making allowances for delays
at the airport, especially for overseas flights.
Each airline has its own policy on handling passengers who's flight is
delayed. In a worst case scenario, your delay may involve an overnight stay.
Some airlines will pay accommodation charges, others will not. Travel insurance will often pay a compensation amount for various
flight time delays.
Insurance.
Due to the nature of air travel, issues such as flight delays, flight
cancellations and lost luggage can impact on your travel plans, in emotional,
physical and financial aspects.
We suggest you ALWAYS take out travel insurance. This is essential for
international travel, where the impact of some of the above issues can be
magnified when in unfamiliar surroundings and possibly in a country where you experience
language difficulties.
We recommend Downunder World Wide Insurance Services. While they push
backpacker insurance - they have a good range of insurance for all styles of
travel.

Health Issues.
It is advisable to check about health issues affecting your country of
destination, and those countries you may visit in transit where you could be
exposed to health issues.
The Traveller's Medical and Vaccination Centre (AKA The
Travel Doctor) has a good level of information for international
travellers, including fact sheets.
