Perth is one of the most remote cities in the world, being further away from any other city than any other city! This makes Perthites a uniquely parochial people, even if a large percentage of the population comes from England. Perth is a diverse city, straddling the magnificent Swan River and flanked by Indian Ocean beaches to the west and hills to the east.
Perth has a Mediterranean climate, with cool-to-cold wet winters and hot dry summers. This means some planning is needed to make sure you visit this wonderful river city when the climate suits
you. Here is some Perth tourist information.
Before arriving in Perth, on any of Australia's airlines (find cheap air tickets here) it is worth booking some discount last minute accommodation if you are arriving in a few days or in just a few weeks, or if longer
travels are planned you can book cheap hotel accommodation here.
Many visitors arrive in Perth via the
international or domestic airport terminals. The airports are about 8kn east of
the city and the fares range from $21-28, depending on which airport you are
travelling from. If you are starting a journey from Perth airport, you
can also hire a car from one of the car rental companies.
Travel around Perth is easy via
a good train network and buses (including free public transport within the city
itself). For longer trips tickets are valid for one and a half hours and are valid
in buses, trains and ferries. Try walking the historic trails and visiting
the Old Gaol, the WA Museum and then visit the Swan Bells at the bottom of
Barrack St. While at the bottom of Barrack St, why now jump on a ferry and head
to the Mends Street jetty, South Perth and take the short stroll to the Pert
Zoo.
Another popular spot in the city
is the intersection of Forrest Place and the Murray Street Mall. It's used
by the city council as a performance space and there's often something
interesting going on, particularly during school holidays. If you are feeling
poor after donating gold coins to the performers, wander over to Hay Street to
the Perth Mint where you can watch gold being poured, handle gold an perhaps
even create your own gold medallion!
A popular destination is Rottnest Island, home to
cute quokkas and a great place to hire a bike and tour the island.. Located 20km
off the coast it is accessible by taking a cruise/tour.
For the thrill seeker, try
Adventure World, located 20 minutes from the city. Heaps of fun rides and family
activities.
A popular destination in Perth is
the magnificent Kings Park that overlooks the city and river. The 17 hectare
gardens are home to natural bushland and botanic gardens. Another popular
outdoor spot is Burswood Park, just a few minutes from the city centre and
surrounding the Burswood Casino. A heritage Trail can be found in the park,
detailing Western Australia's history.
